How to read these figures
Pay. Gross yearly pay for full-time employee jobs in the UK in the tax year ending 5 April 2025, for employees on adult rates who have been in the same job for more than a year, from the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE), which is based on a sample of jobs. Self-employed people are not included. The 2025 provisional figures may be revised next year. Jobs follow the unit groups of the ONS Standard Occupational Classification (SOC 2020).
Median and percentiles. The median is the middle figure: half of employees earn more and half earn less. At the 10th percentile one in ten earn less; at the 25th a quarter earn less; at the 75th a quarter earn more; at the 90th one in ten earn more. Not published means ONS did not publish that figure because the estimate is not reliable enough.
Mean. Total pay divided by the number of employees. A few very high salaries can pull the mean above the median, so the median is usually the better guide to typical pay.
Spread. The 90th percentile divided by the 10th shows how far apart the higher and lower paid are. The gap between the 75th and 25th percentiles shows how wide the middle half of the range is. ONS often does not publish the 90th percentile for a single job, so many pages show only the middle half.
Ranks. 1st is the highest. Ranks compare the 362 occupations on this site; jobs with the same figure share a rank (joint).
Change on the previous year. The percentage change ONS publishes for each median against its estimate a year earlier. ONS does not rate the precision of these changes for occupations, and figures for one occupation come from a sample, so they can move a lot from one year to the next.
Take-home pay. 2026/27 England, Wales and Northern Ireland income tax and employee National Insurance, tax code 1257L, no pension contributions, no student loan and no other income, rounded to the nearest pound. Scottish figures use Scottish income tax. The UK median for all jobs (£39,039) is from ASHE Table 7.
Job counts and quality. ONS says job counts are indicative only. ONS rates each estimate by its coefficient of variation (CV), a measure of sampling error: precise (CV up to 5%), reasonably precise (over 5% and up to 10%) or acceptable (over 10% and up to 20%, use with caution).
How this is worked out
Median salaries are ONS ASHE 2025 provisional figures for full-time employee jobs in the UK, by SOC 2020 unit group, released on 23 October 2025. Take-home pay uses 2026/27 England, Wales and Northern Ireland income tax and National Insurance.
What these figures assume
Pay: gross yearly pay for full-time employee jobs in the tax year ending 5 April 2025, for employees on adult rates in the same job for more than a year. Self-employed people are not included.
Take-home pay: tax code 1257L, no pension contributions, no student loan and no other income, rounded to the nearest pound.
We list the 362 of 412 occupations where ONS published a median it rates as precise, reasonably precise or acceptable. The rest are left out because ONS did not publish a reliable median.
