Editorial policy

How we write and check our calculators and guides, how we correct mistakes, and how we stay independent.

Our calculators only help if the figures are right and the explanations are clear. This page sets out how we work.

Where our figures come from

Every rate, allowance and threshold comes from an official publisher. That means GOV.UK and HMRC for tax, National Insurance, student loans and statutory pay, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for inflation, and NHS Employers and the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) for NHS pay and pension rates. Other official publishers are used where a calculator needs them.

Each calculator links to the official pages it relies on, in the "How this is worked out" box near the bottom of the page. Every 2026/27 figure is also listed in one place on our UK tax rates page.

What each calculator tells you

Each calculator says what it assumes (for example, the tax year, which part of the UK, and what is not included) and the date its figures were last checked against the official source. If an assumption does not fit your situation, the result may not either.

We test each calculator against examples worked out by hand from the official rules. You can see these on how we test our calculators.

When we check

We check our figures:

We also run an automated check each week of the GOV.UK pages we rely on. If a figure on one of those pages changes, we are alerted, and we update the calculators once we have confirmed the change.

Corrections

If you think something is wrong, please tell us through the contact form. Tell us which page or calculator you used, what you entered and what you expected to see.

We check every report against the official source. If we got it wrong, we correct it promptly. We record significant corrections, with the date, in the change log on how we calculate.

Independence

No one pays us to appear on this site or to change what a calculator shows.

The site does not carry adverts or affiliate links today. The one exception is the link to Fathom, the privacy-first service we use to count visits, in the footer. It is a referral link and is marked as sponsored in the page code. If we ever add adverts or affiliate links, we will label them clearly. They will never affect a calculation or the order in which anything appears.

General guidance, not advice

Our calculators and guides give general guidance only. They are not financial or tax advice and do not tell you what to do with your money. For a decision that matters, you may want to check with HMRC or an accountant.
